VISA
Unless an intern specifically requests, all interns are to travel to Australia on Special Programs Visa (Subclass 416). Application will be lodged by AIFS on behalf of intern after an Internship Offer has been signed. Processing time is between 4 and 8 weeks. If Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) requires further information such as medical examination or criminal record check, the process may extend longer and applicants must also take responsibility of such additional cost.
Another visa that would allow holders to work in Australia legally is the Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417). However, there is certain restriction applied, including applicant’s nationality and whether he has previously obtained a Working Holiday Visa. For specific details about this visa, please click here.
In contrast to the Special Programs Visa (Subclass 416) which must be lodged by designated organization, visitors must lodge application for the Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) on their own. Therefore, any participant who wishes to apply for 417 visa would receive a refund of HKD1,500 as the visa application and administration fees, and from then on, they will be fully responsible for obtaining the visa in time for the start of their internship.
Housing and Flight Arrangement
Upon placement confirmation, each intern must attend an online Travel and Housing Session where they will be given information and tips about making their own housing arrangement. They will also receive a list of local housing options, which will include the option of homestay. The homestay arrangement is provided by AIFS. Apart from the given options, interns are also entitled to select any accommodation on their own. In addition, they may also contact Intrinsic for any further advice on housing. Whether it is hostel, shared apartment, or any other type of housing, it is highly recommended to secure a reservation directly with local operator as early as possible.
Similarly, the online Travel and Housing Session would offer participants information regarding how to make their travel arrangement. Since the Special Programs Visa (Subclass 416) confines visitors to stay in Australia for the duration of the program, interns have to enter and leave the country according to the dates on their visa. In general, participants are granted one week before and after the internship dates to travel. According to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship of Australia, visitors must also possess a return or ongoing ticket out of the country.
Prior to departure from Hong Kong, each participant must complete a Travel Plan Form online, in which they must provide their travel arrangement including accommodation and a copy of their return ticket. This must be submitted two weeks before departure.
